Visual inspiration

I have been inspired by different mediums – logo, websites, UI, VR mocks up and exhibition set up. Researching these mediums allowed me to decide on how I wanted to approach my designs, as well as the overall theme.

Logo – I decided to create a illustrated logo based around an elephant. To make it standout I manipulated the shape of the elephant. The colours used stand out and grab the viewers attention automatically.

I researched museum websites because they often have exhibitions setup. I researched the V&A Museum and the Tate Museum. Both websites had a overall muted theme with a splash of pastel colours, as well as a simple yet sleek layout. This is the overall theme that I based the web design around. Including a two column grid and a navigation bar with icons. This chosen theme was carried throughout all the designs that I created.

This app is helpful because it is for an exhibition. The colours used has inspired me to use the same for the app that I’m going to design. The colours are bold, yet not too shocking allowing a nice, eye-catching design. As well as design, it has also inspired me to include features such as rotation of  phone to take a selfie. Additional to this app, I have also researched the QR feature, which would be used in the exhibition to find out more information about Lizzie.

Additional to the app, I have also created a VR cardboard mock up to pair with the app. I have seen an exhibition with this so I thought that it would be a good extra. Again, to keep the theme for all the designs uniform, the colours and logos are the same.

Although I wasn’t assigned the exhibition planning in my group. I still researched a few ideas and found the above, most appealing. The theme of the exhibition is futuristic and innovative. The exhibition presented each prototype as its own mini-world, this is something that we could do with the elephants.

Team work & Communication

Effective team work and communication was an important element because it helped us deliver a high quality product. As well as, helped us build a relationship because we haven’t met anyone in our group before hand.

Communication in particular was critical and driven by all of the team because it helped bring us together and accomplish our end goal. When communicating, we raised a lot of good ideas and all provided input which established an open, supportive environment among us. This also allowed us to learn from each other. In order to communicate we used different methods, which included using online platforms (Slack & Facebook), as well as verbal. The online platform Slack in particular was useful because it allowed us to share our ideas in depth with picture and links to provide more information. This gave us a visual platform and helped us link the documentary together.  Facebook chat was also useful because it helped us plan meetings quickly and pass on any urgent messages that we needed to share within the group.

We also  used brainstorming on paper, as a method of communication.  This was useful because we came together as a group and shared all ideas or adjustments that we thought needed to be made in a fast and efficient way. Because we used effective communication we were able to successfully meet the deadline. Also, because we asked each other questions, built trust and shared the work load between each other we were able to work together in a great working environment.

Lastly, all the team member had different skills and levels of knowledge when it came to software, fundamentals and communicating. Each of our platforms whether it be in filming, photography, editing, graphic design, sound or animation has its own rules and skill sets. None the less, as the group we share our knowledge on all these platforms to improve the products we produced and the way we communicated.

In terms of independent roles, I took on the role of the website, logo, app UI and VR mock-up for the exhibition, because I believe that user interface is one of my strong points and something that I felt comfortable with creating.

Logo – The logo that I created is an illustration/type based logos because I think they are very distinctive. The function of the logo is to inform the audience that the ‘Lizzie the Elephant’ is about an elephant. Therefore it will be a visual interpretation of the elephant. The colours used are orange/grey/white. I have made two versions of the logo so that I can play around with the colour contrasts, once the logo is applied to the different mediums.

Website – To start of the website research  I analysed two existing museum websites called Tate modern & V&A. I then researched common conventions/fundamentals used on websites similar. The four different features that I focused on were: Tones & language | Layout | colour | Font.

Tone and language – the feelings expressed when seeing colour. When the audience views the website I wanted them to feel vibrant and excited. This is because I want it to attract the target audience, as well as express a lively theme. The overall tone will be simple, with the right colour palette, which will automatically associate with the topic of the documentary/website.

 Layout – the layout used for the website will be simple. The colour layout used will be a colour block, which is a block of colour in design that gives the layout a bold feel. All the elements on the website will be aligned in the centre using a grid and there will be a hierarchy using different sizes and weights of either text, video or images to create paths. Lastly, white space will be included to help define separate areas on the website.

Colours – Colour strikes different emotions depending on the person. I will use colour to make certain elements on the website stand out. The background will be a solid orange colour. It will be bold but not distracting to make sure it doesn’t take away the message of the website.

Font – The font used will be century gothic for the main text and a custom font called Animatic for the headings. The reason why I have chosen to use these fonts is because they are easily readable, despite the size that they are scaled at. The animatic font gives off a fun, playful vibe.

Overall I want the website to be an expression and create excitement.

App UI – Similar to the website, the app will carry the same fundamentals. The only different will be the features added. The app will be more interactive, for example there will be a QR scan code, photo feature and more information about the artists and elephants.

QR code – At the exhibition there will be a QR code for each elephant sculpture on display, which the user can scan and get additional information on the app.

Photo feature – This can be enabled in the app. This will allow the user to take a photo with a lizzie the elephant filter. This will enhance interactivity with the user and the exhibition.

The app will also include the documentary video, which will be paired with the VR cardboard mock-up which I have created. This is to allow the user to continue their experience in the comfort of their own home or in their own time. Therefore the app can be used at the exhibition or other places. The VR cardboard mock-up uses the same colour scheme and font as the other branding used for the documentary.

Overall the app will be used to enhance the users experience and enable more interactivity, in addition to the VR itself.

Existing VR videos

I have researched existing VR documentaries which has allowed me to gain more knowledge on how VR works and final outcomes.

This VR has a very natural theme due to the content in the video. I like the way the story has been set out. Also having this video as a VR helps me feel as if i’m experiencing the documentary first hand – Like i’ve teleport-ed. I also like the low and high tones used in the different clips. It gives the video a contrast. Lastly, the voice over used is very powerful. It compliments the clips in the video very well and gives the documentary more depth.

This VR really explores the issues included in the video. The interviews gives me, the viewer a better insight of the issues and allows me to gain an opinion. Visually, the scene i liked the most in the video is the VR capture at a birds eye-view. This is the first i’ve seen this angle of shooting used in VR form. I think it is a very effective shot. Lastly, I like the non-digetic sound (birds) at the end of the video, which is used while text appears. This ends the video in a very soothing note.

This VR is different to the first two because the person filming is very head-on, as they are involved in their surroundings. Also, the VR has a few tracking shots which aren’t ideal for virtual reality, however i think the video has a good outcome using this technique. Lastly, I also like the voice over, as well as the digetic sound from the crowds in the protests. This enhances my experience and made me feel more involved.

Overall I enjoyed watching all three videos as they all gave me a different experience, as they were different in their own way. I have also gained some valuable techniques which i will share with the rest of my group.

Topic Research – Lizzie The Elephant

As a group we decided to focus on Lizzie the elephant, which was the main inspiration for the charity. Lizzie is an elephant that was important to Sheffield’s steel industry in 1916 during WW1. Lizzie was one of the most important workers in the Sheffield’s steel industry in 1961. Lizzie was recruited by Ward to replace horses that were requisitioned by the military to serve in Europe during the war. Lizzie was also a symbol of how welcoming the city of Sheffield was and continued to be for people from all over the world. For this reason we have chose to focus our documentary around her.

As well as Lizzie, we have also focused on a charity called the Herd of Sheffield, which is focused on different elephant sculptures for the Children’s hospital. The herd descended on Sheffield for the biggest public art event in the city. The trail of 58 celebrated Sheffield’s creativity with over 75% of artists from the city. Some of which we decide on interviewing for the documentary.

The Children’s hospital charity, helps children recover and puts workshops for children to provide distractions. They collaborate with artists and designers to work directly on improving their space. As a group, we have decided to create a documentary that includes graphics, animation, video and sound which would be fun for the patients, as well as the other target audience that we have aimed our project at.

This research has been useful because it informed us on the history of Lizzie the elephant, what the Herd of Sheffield charity was about, as well as what the charity does for the children at the hospital. It has also helped us decide what we wanted to include in our documentary.
